 | A small light in a dark room
Presentation at the UUP and EAP Online Symposium: 'Ethical challenges for psychotherapists in our changing world" Friday, 24 February 2023
In
historic exceptional or in highly polarised contexts, acting ethically
has often necessitated personal risk taking. What motivates people to
do what they feel is 'right' even if doing so may compromise their own
safety? Moreover, can we develop psychotherapeutic perspectives both
for our own and our clients/patients benefits? The presentation
considers key aspects of acting ethically in historic extreme contexts,
and invites participants to reflect on their personal motivations to
act ethically.
| | Building bridges - Contemporary perspectives on fragmentation in psychotherapy'
Keynote presentation at the 1st Congress of Psychotherapists in Bosnia and Herzegovina - 'Psychotherapy within the changing world' in Sarajevo, 23 - 26 March 2023
Fragmentation
and dissociative dynamics are a primary focus for psychotherapy ever
since Freud, Breuer and Janet. Neuroscientists and physiologists have
added greatly to our contemporary understanding and range of
therapeutic clinical interventions. At the other end of this spectrum,
multiple self-states and associated dissociative dynamics appear
crucial to higher order functioning. How can we orient within this
field and utilise psychophysiological self-states dynamics as a
valuable resource in the therapeutic relationship?
| | Cultural selfs and their psychophysiological presentations in the consulting room
Keynote presentation at the 18th International Congress of EABP - 'Identity in transformative times - Construction, deconstruction, reconstruction' in Sofia, Bulgaria, 7 - 10 September 2023
Culture
and diversity associated psychophysiological states or distress
commonly remain unseen in the therapeutic endeavour to the detriment of
client's psychotherapeutic process. This calamity is well recognised by
psychotherapy organisations and institutes and the lack of significant
progress is therefore puzzling. Some indications appear to suggest that
culture and diversity dynamics in the consulting room may challenge our
psychophysiology more powerfully than Eros or sexuality. This
presentation aims to utilise somatic, relational, and `multiple selfs'
perspectives to deconstruct, and reconstruct, the puzzle of culture and
difference dynamics in the therapeutic relationship.
