 | The EAP and the Emancipation of Psychotherapy in Europe
Opening presentation at the ICP Conference 2026: Beyond
Compliance: Protecting the Identity & Culture of Psychotherapy in
an Era of Professional Regulation in Dublin on 26/09/2026
The
1990 'Strasbourg Declaration' affirmed psychotherapy as an independent
scientific discipline. The EAP was founded over three decades ago to
create robust education and practice standards on the hand, and to
promote psychotherapy regulation on the other. Both initiative have a
common aim - to ensure the highest standards for psychotherapy services
across Europe and to ensure 'patient safety', i.e. to protect clients
and patients from rouge therapists causing harm. In 2026, 'regulation'
is slowly progressing across Europe, and psychotherapy is a
vibrant and profession in 43 European countries with uniform
international standards. But further important issues remain. How are
we managing the diversity within our discipline and how are presenting
ourselves to society? How do we present ourselves in the best interests
of our patients looking for orientation? |
